Dr. Hunstad and his staff are dedicated to exceptional results and an overall wonderful experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Dr. Hunstad has practiced plastic surgery in Charlotte for over 18 years. Our fully accredited ambulatory surgical Center offers state-of-the-art equipment and safety. Dr. Hunstad is past President of the NC Society of Plastic Surgeons, past President-Elect of the Lipoplasty Society of North America, and Chairman of the Body Contour Research Foundation. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the North Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the NC Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Mecklenburg County Medical Society.

Dr. Hunstad graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, served his Internship and General Surgery residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan and immediately following, completed his residency in Plastic Surgery at the Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center. He completed a coveted fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at the MECOM Microsurgery Institute, Baylor Department of Plastic Surgery, in Houston Texas.

Joseph P. Hunstad M.D., F.A.C.S., is the President of the Hunstad Center for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery PA, and is the only Plastic Surgeon in the Charlotte Region to be a Member of the faculty of Duke University. He serves as an Assistant Consulting Professor at Duke Medical Center, Department of Surgery, and Section of Plastic Surgery. He is Section Head of Plastic Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, University Hospital, in Charlotte, NC. He is former Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of NC, Chapel Hill and former Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor Department of Plastic Surgery in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Hunstad has published more then thirty-eight Plastic Surgery articles in world literature, teaching plastic surgery procedures to other plastic surgeons. He has published numerous chapters in plastic surgery textbooks, most recently regarding plastic surgery following bariatric, massive weight loss, surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation featured Dr. Hunstad performing a circumferential abdominoplasty in an instructional DVD and video for its members. He has also been featured in instructional videos from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. His techniques on Tumescent Surgery and Circumferential Abdominoplasty have been made into instructional videos by the Lipoplasty Society of North America and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Hunstad has been extremely honored to be featured as a guest lecturer for many State and regional medical Society's including the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, the North Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons, the South Carolina's Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Florida State Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Capitol Area Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons.

By invitation, he has lectured and performed live surgery in many countries of the world including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, England, France, Israel, Italy, Norway, Mexico, and Spain. He has been an invited faculty member, teaching plastic surgeons current procedures and techniques throughout the United States and internationally.

Moreover, the native North Carolinian and family man at heart had a sincere desire to be close to his fiancé and his family. With a background specializing in both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, this experienced and well-trained surgeon has made significant contributions to his field since completing his training at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He has lectured and mentored medical students, written several scientific publishing's and has performed over 5,000 surgical cases.

A genuine desire to help others is what led Dr. Kortesis to pursue a career in medicine. He finds plastic surgery particularly unique because of the amazing ability to reconstruct any part of the body back to its natural form and believes the cutting edge technology in plastic surgery has paved the way for advances in the field of medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kortesis has practiced his craft with the greatest efficiency but what is most impressive is his compassion for his patients in and outside of the center. He recently treated patients in Bolivia during his work with the Partners of the Americas. This experience afforded him the opportunity to aid pediatric patients with severe burn injuries and inspired him to want to do more. He strongly believes in giving his time, energy and gift of reconstructive surgery to others and has committed to performing mission work each year.

Finishing at the top of his class in medical school, getting into the most competitive medical specialty and receiving the respect of his plastic surgery teachers are just some of his many achievements. On a personal level he is proud of his personal relationships and mentoring young children within his church community.
