Dr. Smith’s Background

After completing his Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan and his initial residencies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and the University of CA at Irvine, Dr. Smith received his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of CA, Los Angeles.  The UCLA program is reputed to be one of the best of its kind in country.  Dr. Smith honed his skills working side-by-side with many well-regarded plastic surgeons in the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles areas, some who are members of the extreme makeover team.

During Dr. Smith’s chief residency at UCLA he had the opportunity to participate in the surgery to separate conjoined twins from Guatemala.  Lasting nearly 24 hours, the procedure was a huge success and became the model for separating other conjoined twins.  Media coverage of the operation included front page stories in the New York Times and Los Angeles times as well as segments on the Today show and Good Morning America.
