Cutting back on animal fats can reduce breast cancer risk by 33%. A study of more than 90,000 women found that those who got 21% or more of their daily calories from fats of animal products, such as beef and cheese, had the highest risk of developing breast cancer.
June, 1999, after a self breast exam, I discovered a lump on my left breast directly under my nipple. It was hard, painless and had a strange shape. It felt very different from all the other lumps and bumps that I would normally feel on my breast in the past. At that point I had a checkup with my GYN. He said, it's probably just a calcification but you must get a mammogram. Upon getting the mammogram, I was told that I needed a sonogram as there was a lot of calcification and the mammogram was unclear. It seemed like I was sitting in the waiting room for an eternity before the technician came out and said, the radiologist would like to speak with you. He showed me the x-ray and said, "you have cancer. I suggest you see a breast surgeon." Imagine my horror.
On June 14, 1999, I had a lumpectomy. The pathology report showed breast cancer approaching stage 2. My options were either removal of the lymph nodes and 7 weeks of radiation, at which point my breast would become like shoe leather or a radical mastectomy. If I opted for lymph node removal, there was a 35% change that the cancer would return. I must have cried a river as the breast surgeon gave me this news. Then he said, don't cry, you can get breast implants. All my life I had been flat chested and having big breasts was my long life dream.
On July 14, 1999 I had a mastectomy and my plastic surgeon was on hand to start the reconstruction process. On July 30, 1999, my birthday, I got the results of the pathology report. The cancer did not spread. There would be no need for chemo or radiation. Imagine my delight. What a birthday present! I went to the message boards but realized that women just getting breast augmentation could not relate to my plight. Getting breast augmentation surgery would be a piece of cake in comparison to getting cancer and having a mastectomy. There complaints of pain from surgery had me saying to myself, after what I've been through, this surgery will be a breeze. The psychological impact as a woman having her breast cut off was overwhelming to me.
On December 10, 1999 I had breast augmentation reconstructive surgery. There was minimal pain and the results were fabulous. My breasts look beautiful and I am cancer free. I went from a 34aa to a 36c. I am 43 years old and looking better than ever. Breast cancer strikes all ages and does not discriminate. I urge all the ladies to do monthly breast exams. Because I acted immediately, my life was spared and now I look like a beauty queen. Now I know that there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel.

I had my BA done on June 30/99. I had round/under the muscle Hutchinson implants put in. I went from a 36B to a 36D. I was thrilled with the results of the surgery. In Feb of this year I noticed a lump on my right breast on the side of it. It turned out to be Stage II breast cancer. A month ago I had a lumpectomy and will go through cancer treatment. My point is that I feel that I would not have found the lump myself as quickly, had the implant not have pushed up the breast tissue. I do not think that the implants had anything to do with getting cancer, I think it was just dumb luck along with a heredity of it my family and I would have gotten the cancer whether I got the implants or not (they say the cancer has been there up to 10 years before you can detect anything). I do not regret getting the implants, and I am anxious to get the right one fixed after I am finished with my treatments. I figure I had 9 months of the most beautiful breasts in the world. Eliminate the "drive-through mastectomy"

The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached. Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on. PLEASE!!! Sign the petition by clicking above.
Birth Control Pills
Because of the estrogen in Birth Control Pills, cancer patients should not take them. However, one brand, Mircette, puts all the estrogen in what are normally the "blank" or "sugar" pills. You are not required to take these, as they are only used to keep you used to taking a pill each day. Thus, buy Mircette and you can skip these pills and thus not ingest any additional estrogen. Should Mircette change the make up, please check with your doctor or pharmacist.
