COMMENT: I am very satisfied with my new look. The surgery, of course, is painful. Any surgery is painful. I am amazed at my healing. Everyday I feel better and it has been progressing rapidly. I have had no significant swelling or bruising. The plastic surgeon (in Atlanta) I used was excellent. The office even sent flowers to my home the day after which was very impressive.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: I panicked at the moment of going under anesthesia-wondering what in the world I was doing there. The pain was definitely the worst part.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: Everyone has made general comments i.e., "whatever makes you happy", my husband is the only person who's seen me other than the plastic surgeon and nurses since the surgery. My husband is very pleased and has been re- markably supportive though he was initially against it.

COMMENT: Although I love the new look, I would never go through this much pain given a choice in the matter again. That's a matter of personal choice and everyone has to decide that for themselves.

COMMENT: the first surgery was done in 1985 with 175 cc. This was fine until I had a second child in 1992. I lost some breast tissue due to the pregnancy and decided to have it redone. I also was not happy with the size. In 1993, I had 375 cc input and afterwards noticed a lot more rippling and could feel the implants. Prior to this second surgery, it was not noticeable that I even had surgery. The left side started going hard and I was feeling pain in 1997. I decided to have them redone because of capsular contraction on the one side. I also decided to go a bit larger and have them overfilled so that there would not be so much rippling and they would feel firmer. I had 425 cc put in Oct. 97 and the surgeon filled them to 500 cc, So far they seem okay, although one side is a bit harder than the other. I am massaging them a lot which is something I did not do the second time. I really hope I never have to go through it again. Most important is to get the right size that you are happy with. I also noticed that they seemed to decrease in size after time.

Worrying about possible complications following the surgery, i.e., capsular contraction or having to redo the procedure.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: Yes. I made the mistake of telling my mother I was planning on having the surgery and telling her I wanted to be a C cup. She told me I'd look like a freak.

COMMENT: After eight days the swelling in my breasts has gone down a lot I'm kind of bummed. They look smaller and my appearance in clothes is almost the same as it was pre-surgery, as I always wore heavy-duty padded bras. My boyfriend assures me that they are still "big" enough and that any bigger would be too much. They look great naked - I'm very pleased, but my expectations were maybe a little too high.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: The first 2 days after the surgery the pain was frankly incredible! I really felt like I couldn't breathe and the medication prescribed for pain, Endocet, did not allow me to keep any food down.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: No way. My friends are all concerned about my health and how I am feeling.

COMMENT: I read the survey results before my surgery. They definitely helped me to mentally prepare. I did buy some extra pillows and that was key! The most important thing was the support and acceptance of those around me. My boyfriend was able to help do do things that I would not have been able to do by myself sitting up and feeding me. We had an arsenal of movies that we watched while he took the whole day off to care for me. Basically, my feelings are that is you are going to have this procedure done it would be optimal to have someone who can care for you the first 2 days. Its day 5 and I'm now back at work feeling great.

COMMENT: I'd been considering getting implants for the last 10 years. But I think I was convinced that the only girls who got it done were the "Pamela Anderson" type bimbos. The more I matured, the more I realized that it is an intensely personal decision, and that it's OK to want to improve something that you're so self-conscious about. I couldn't be happier with my decision, but am glad I waited to be sure it was what I really wanted. Can't wait to go swimsuit shopping!

WORST PART OF SURGERY: First the logistics (3 busy children, job, not wanting anyone to know, not driving for a week...) but probably post-operative pain was the worst part. But only for about 5 hours. After that the pain was manageable, and by the next day I was much better.Recovery is going great; I just have to remember to not overdo & set myself back.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: Haven't been out much yet & I'm keeping pretty covered-up for now!

COMMENT: A few tips:

A very important thing, more than you might think, is getting a comfortable lying/sleeping arrangement before you come home. Get pillows arranged so that your upper back and head are elevated and I used one under my knees too. It's hard to shift and move when you get home & you'll wish you'd practiced this before.

If you don't already, try to learn to sleep on your back. It's the only way you can post-op, and it helps to be comfortable that way already.

I have a very queasy stomach (get carsick) so I was worried about the meds making me sick. I sipped water, munched a saltine and ate a couple bites of Jello before each pill and either it was that or the shot of Composine the anesthetist gave me before I left but I never felt ill. That was a big relief. I took a generic for Percocet for pain. Only for the first 2 days; after that Ex Strength Tylenol.

This is Day 4 and I'm surprised how good I feel. Only still very tight and swollen; like when breastfeeding and your milk comes in, just more so. I went from a small A to what will hopefully be a mid C; right now I must be a D or DD because of swelling. I think I will be very happy with the results in a few weeks. Because of this site I knew pretty much what to expect and it helped me decide to go ahead with surgery.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: One of my friends, (who happens to be a D cup naturally) says she cant believe I did it. Oh well!

COMMENT: I have been contemplating having this surgery on and off for three years. I decided to wait until my baby (who is now 2 1/2) was old enough not to have to be carried all of the time, lifted out of his car seat, etc. Right now, I have absolutely no regrets. I am really swollen, but the pain is bearable. Be sure you take your pain medicine on time- it is much easier to control that way, before it gets out of hand. Have lots of pillows, water at your bedside, turn off the ringer to your phone, and plan to sleep the whole day. Good Luck to anyone who decides to do this!

RIPPLE COMMENTS: I have very little body fat or natural breast tissue so I have ripples- definitely.  On one breast I even have them in the middle and it is noticeable to me when I lean forward to brush my teeth.  The other ripples are on the outter edges and are noticeable with my arms overhead combined with leaning forward.  They bothered me some at first, but I am used to it and they still look great- my boyfriend doesn't notice them either.

COMMENT: I expected to be bigger. I am 5'7". I interviewed 4 plastic surgeons. Three of the four recommended 330cc filled to 360cc. The fourth recommended 380cc filled to 410cc. All said I had a wide chest with plenty of room.

I went with 330cc filled to 360cc. Although I am still swollen from the surgery, I can tell that I am going to be disappointed in the size.

I don't know why the plastic surgeons are so conservative in the size they recommended.

On the other hand, the pain is terrible. So if pain is proportional to the size of the implant, maybe the smaller implants are a blessing.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: The pain afterwards. My surgeon had told me this was the worst part of this and he wasn't kidding. The pain management was good.

I had some problems with a lymph node not draining and that has caused some discomfort.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: The medication. It made me dizzy and sick to my stomach. And trying to get out of bed and still having to sleep on my back. The surgery went fine and you don't feel a thing, they just put in an ivy and you fall asleep and wake up in about 2 hours and you sleep for a couple of days and are really tired. I just really hated taking the medicine more than anything but you need it for the pain.. But honestly, I think a bladder infection is worse than having breast surgery.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: I did a lot of research, therefore I knew what to expect. I knew about the pain, possible nausea and the fact that I would be very limited physically for the first little while. The only thing I was not prepared for was the depression that hit me after surgery. I don't know what caused it, but I began to seriously consider calling my plastic surgeon in order to have him remove the implants ASAP!! (It felt a little like post-natal depression). I later found out that some women DO experience a form of depression following this type of operation. Apparently, it has something to do with mourning the loss of your previous body image (even though you really do like the new you better)!! Needless to say, by day 4 the depression did leave me and I started to really like what I saw and how it made me feel about myself.

CHANGES IN NIPPLE SENSATION: I got my implants along with a breast lift (mastopexy). I breastfed 3 children, and would go to a DD while pregnant. I was left with the breasts of a 90 year old! I'm still in some pain, but it's not that horrible!

WORST PART OF SURGERY: The anxiety before. My DR gave me Valium to take the night before, and the morning of. That helped. Waking up after surgery and getting to the car was tough!

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: Just one friend who is concerned about the health risks, but she is the type of person who would oppose it simply because it is politically correct to do so. My husband loves the results and feels that my overall shape has improved considerably. No one else has seen them yet, but I am excited to show them off.

COMMENT: I hear a lot of people complaining about not being big enough post-surgery, but we need to keep in mind that the size that your plastic surgeon suggests is usually relative to your frame. I think augmentation gets a bad rap when women over do it and end up stretching their skin with implants that are noticeably too big, i.e., Pamela Anderson Lee. I believe the main goal is to achieve larger, natural looking breasts that could pass for being real, not the largest breasts you could possibly shove into your body. We need to encourage discretion and correct sizing for height and body frame.

WORST PART OF SURGERY: I am suffering terrible capsular encapture. Both breasts are rock-hard, and the pain is becoming unbearable. They have sagged considerably in the last 6-8 weeks. I am contemplating having them removed completely. I can feel the ripples and ridges of the implants through the skin.

Has anyone made any negative remarks to you about your surgery?: Everyone I ask says that they look terrible.

COMMENT: Dr. David Fineberg of Buffalo NY performed the surgery. He can best be described as a butcher. The original implants started to deflate within 3-4 weeks. Dr. Fineberg convinced me that they needed to be replaced. I was hesitant to undergo a second procedure, but Dr. Fineberg convinced me that the implant company (Inamed (formerly McGhan) ?) would completely reimburse me for the cost of procedure, and the deflated implants. I found out that while under anaesthesia, Dr. Fineberg decided to inflate my second implants to well beyond their rated capacity, to over 330 cc. Secondly, in order to receive my reimbursement, I was told (after surgery) that I'd have to sign a release form, absolving Dr. Fineberg and Inamed (formerly McGhan) of any possible future action as a result of the deflation. I decided NOT to sign that document. I have not been reimbursed, and Dr. Fineberg had the audacity to actually send me a bill for the second pair of implants. My breasts look terrible. They have sagged horribly and hardened up and now feel like rocks. I've been told I have no legal recourse against this butcher, so I'm doing all I can to dissuade other women from seeing this quack.
